Description
Glimepiride is used for an adjunct to diet to lower the blood glucose in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes) whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet, physical exercise and weight reduction.
Glimepiride is also used for use in combination with Insulin to lower blood glucose in patients whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet and exercise or in conjunction with an oral hypoglycemic agent.
Product Usage
Starting dose: 1 mg once daily. Max starting dose: 2 mg once daily. Maintenance: 1-4 mg once daily. Max: 8 mg once daily. After reaching a dose of 2 mg, any increase in dosage should be in increments of not >1 mg at 1-2 wk intervals based on the patient's glucose response.
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before or during breakfast/1st main meal of the day. Do not skip meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to glimepiride or other sulfonylureas. Type 1 diabetes. Severe renal or hepatic insufficiency. Diabetic ketoacidosis w/ or w/o coma. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Allergy to other sulfonamide derivatives. Increased risk of CV mortality.
